Hatfield Consultants Ltd. – Osborn Bay, Howe Sound, Neroutsos Inlet, Alberni Inlet and Powell River, B.C.

B.C. Coastal Pulp Mills Environmental Effects Monitoring:

Environment Canada Guidelines require pulp mills to monitor the receiving environment adjacent to their outfalls. Monitoring includes sampling for benthic community studies as well as various chemical analyses. For each location, Biologica provided a range of services which included benthic sample sieving and preservation in the field, sorting of organisms from the sediment, identification to species where possible, data presentation, wet-weight biomass and archiving of specimens.

Rescan Environmental Consultants Ltd. – Various Projects

Laboratory processing of samples for aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, periphyton and phytoplankton in support of mining EEM studies in Northern B.C., Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories from 2005 to present.

Rescan Environmental Consultants and Coeur Alaska Inc. – Juneau, Alaska

This joint study was conducted for a proposed mine site at Lynn Canal, Alaska for the U.S. and Alaska state governments. A detailed benthic and zooplankton study was carried out by Rescan to determine the feasibility of submarine tailings discharge. Biologica completed both benthic and zooplankton identification requirements.

P.T. Newmont Mining – Minahasa Raya Mine, Manado Sulawesi, Indonesia

Biologica has been working on identifications of marine benthic organisms taken offshore on a tailings disposal site from 1998 to 2007.

GL Williams and Associates Ltd. – Marsh Reclamation Study, Port Moody, B.C.

This study was conducted to determine the success of recolonization for a marsh restoration study. Invertebrates were identified from sediment cores and epibenthic sled samples collected from the marsh, the adjoining mudflat and nearby intertidal sites.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Various Projects

Biologica staff has participated in zooplankton studies aboard research vessels at sea and have identified both open-ocean and coastal plankton. Our staff completed the 1999 Exotic Species Survey in the Strait of Georgia. We were present during the survey of the migrant ships for attached exotics.

Identification of marine invertebrates collected from coastal areas for review of presence of invasive species (2007).

Identification of invertebrates found in Sea Chest and Ballast Water samples.

National Defence Canada – Esquimalt, B.C.

Assistance with fouling organism studies (including age data for young bivalves) from the cooling systems aboard HMCS Regina, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Calgary.

Environment Canada, Pacific Environmental Science Center – North Vancouver, B.C.

Biologica has supplied live Eohaustorias washingtonianus (Amphipoda) to Environment Canada’s aquatic toxicity laboratory for sediment toxicity studies. Animals have been collected live from a west coast beach and delivered to the test facility.

Biology Department, Acadia University – Wolfville, Nova Scotia

Annual collection of live Boccardia proboscidea (Polychaete) for larval development research studies.

Tera Environmental Consultants – Satellite Channel and Manley Landing, B.C.

Biologica participated in two surveys which were part of marine studies associated with the impact assessment of a proposed marine gas pipeline crossing of Georgia Strait. We provided field support for sample collection and completed the laboratory processing.

Metro Vancouver Sewage Outfall Studies – Burrard Inlet and Fraser Delta, B.C.

From 2001 to the present (2009) Biologica has been involved with the sample screening and laboratory processing of samples collected for assessment of the sewage outfalls for both Lions Gate (since 2003) and Iona Treatment Plants.

Azimuth Consulting Ltd. – Prince Rupert, B.C.

Laboratory processing of marine benthic samples in support of contaminant studies conducted near Prince Rupert.

Azimuth Consulting Ltd. – Various Locations, B.C.

Aquatic invertebrate studies of various contaminated sites for regulatory purposes.

Azimuth Consulting Ltd. – Port Alberni, B.C.

Assistance with sampling and the identification of invertebrates collected from an intertidal restoration site along the Somass River, B.C.

HEMMERA – Fraser Delta, B.C.

Biologica assisted with field collection and laboratory processing of marine benthic sample collections near a container port expansion on the Fraser Delta.

Archipelago Marine Research Ltd. – Fraser Delta, B.C.

Biologica staff assisted with a survey of intertidal dendritic channels on the Fraser Delta as part of an impact assessment study.

Archipelago Marine Research Ltd. – Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C.

Biologica supplied sampling equipment and provided laboratory processing for samples collected near the Queen Charlotte Islands for an impact assessment project.

Jacques Whitford AXYS – Kitimat, B.C.

Biologica staff assisted with a marine benthic invertebrate sampling program as part of an impact assessment study for a berth facility in Kitimat Arm.

Keystone Environmental Ltd. – Howe Sound, B.C.

Biologica staff participated in the field collection and the laboratory processing of samples from a contaminated site in Howe Sound, B.C.

WorleyParsons – Comox, B.C.

Biologica provided field assistance and laboratory processing for a sewage outfall study.

David Burt and Associates – Sooke, B.C.

Biologica provided laboratory support for three years of seasonal sampling in the Sooke and Leach River systems to monitor re-colonization by aquatic invertebrates in response to improved stream flow measures.

Dillon Consultants Ltd. – Various Projects, B.C.

Processing of invertebrates found in streams from mine sites and municipality streams.

FKW Consultants Ltd. – Saanich, B.C.

Monitoring of aquatic invertebrates found in an entrained creek flowing through the Saanich municipality.

BHP Minerals Canada Ltd. – Island Copper Mine, Rupert Inlet, B.C.

The mine site was located on a coastal inlet and discharged copper tailings via a submarine discharge system. The annual monitoring program studied 16 stations with 3 replicates each from 1971 to mine closure in 1995. Two post-operational surveys were conducted in 1996 and 1997, as well as a rapid assessment survey of the six most impacted sites in 1998. A final survey was conducted in the fall of 2000.
